Your area-by-area roadmap

The HESI A2 covers seven content areas across math, English language, and science. Programs choose which sections they require, so confirm your school's list first, then study one area at a time and reinforce it with flashcards and a full-length timed test.

Mathematics

Math · basic operations applied to healthcare

Arithmetic and measurement in nursing contexts: fractions, decimals, percents, ratios and proportions, unit conversions, and simple algebra word problems.

Numbers, operations & measurement

  • Be fluent converting among fractions, decimals, and percents.
  • Master ratios and proportions — the basis of dosage and dilution problems.
  • Know metric and household measurement conversions (kg↔g, L↔mL, etc.).
  • Follow order of operations exactly and check the final step.

Applied problem solving

  • Translate word problems into one equation before solving.
  • Compute means and read values from simple tables.
  • Estimate first so an unreasonable answer stands out.

  • Note the author's purpose and tone from word choice.

Answer from the passage

  • Inference questions ask what must follow from the text, not what is merely plausible.
  • Return to the passage to confirm detail answers.
  • Use context to define vocabulary-in-context items.

Vocabulary

  • Learn common medical roots and affixes (hypo-, -ectomy, -itis, etio-).

  • Set off nonessential clauses with commas; keep essential clauses unpunctuated.
  • Avoid fragments, run-ons, and dangling or misplaced modifiers.
