MCAT Study Guide
Your area-by-area roadmap
The MCAT is four timed sections — Chem/Phys, CARS, Bio/Biochem, and Psych/Soc — scored together on a 472–528 scale. Most questions are tied to a passage, so the core skill is reasoning from data and text under time, not recall alone. Study one section at a time, drill your two weakest disciplines, then take full-length timed exams.
Chem/Phys
Section I · 59 questions · 95 minutes
Chemical and physical foundations: general chemistry, physics, organic chemistry, and biochemistry as they apply to living systems. Passages are often data- or experiment-heavy.
Read data-heavy passages
- Identify what was measured, what varied, and what the author concluded before the questions.
- For a table or graph, read the axes and headers first, then triage the questions.
- Discrete (non-passage) questions are worth the same as passage questions — don't over-invest.
Core content
- Kinetics and equilibrium, thermodynamics, acids/bases and buffers.
- Circuits, fluids, optics, and energy in a biological context.
- Reaction mechanisms (SN1/SN2), separations, and spectroscopy basics.
High-yield takeaways
- Rate laws, buffers, and Ohm's-law reasoning appear repeatedly.
- Eliminate choices that require an assumption the passage never supports, even if scientifically true elsewhere.
CARS
Section II · 53 questions · 90 minutes
Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills: dense humanities and social-science passages with no outside knowledge required. Every answer is defended entirely from the text.
Map the argument
- Track the author's main point, tone, and how each paragraph functions.
- Note where competing viewpoints are introduced and how the author evaluates them.
- Distinguish what the author asserts from what the author merely reports.
Answer from the text
- Inference questions ask what must follow, not what is merely plausible.
- Strengthen/weaken and application questions hinge on the argument's structure.
- Extreme wording is usually wrong unless the passage is equally strong.
High-yield takeaways
- Never bring in outside knowledge — CARS tests reasoning from the passage only.
- The best main-idea answer captures the whole passage without overreaching.
Bio/Biochem
Section III · 59 questions · 95 minutes
Biological and biochemical foundations: molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, physiology, and biochemistry, tested largely through experimental passages.
Core content
- Enzyme kinetics and inhibition (competitive vs. noncompetitive), metabolism, and bioenergetics.
- Central dogma: replication, transcription, translation, and gene regulation.
- Organ-system physiology and how structure supports function.
Experimental reasoning
- Interpret controls, variables, and results in a described experiment.
- Predict what a change to the setup would do to the outcome.
- Connect a molecular mechanism to a physiological effect.
High-yield takeaways
- Enzyme-inhibition and Vmax/Km reasoning is very high-yield.
- Amino acids, metabolic pathways, and membrane transport recur across exams.
Psych/Soc
Section IV · 59 questions · 95 minutes
Psychological, social, and biological foundations of behavior: psychology, sociology, and the biological basis of behavior, tested through studies and data.
Core content
- Learning, memory, cognition, and the major theoretical perspectives.
- Sensation and perception, motivation, emotion, and stress.
- Social structure, stratification, demographics, and research methods.
Study & data reasoning
- Read the study design: sample, variables, and what the results show.
- Recognize named effects and theories when a scenario illustrates them.
- Interpret basic statistics and figures presented in the passage.

- Research-methods and terminology-recognition questions are frequent.
- Know the signature effects (e.g., spacing effect, cognitive biases) by scenario, not just definition.
